There are two engines, a 3.5-liter V6 and a high-output electric motor. Total horsepower for the system is 340 with the zero to sixty leap taking only 5.2 seconds. (Top speed is 131 mph.) Estimated fuel economy is 25 mpg city and 28 highway.

Occupants are protected by double air bags in the front as well as by bags mounted in the seats to cushion the impact of a lateral collision. Bags are also present in the curtain and knee position for the protection of the driver and front passenger. (Rear passengers enjoy the benefit of side and curtain bags.) Systems are in place for the control of traction, stability, and tire monitoring. The doors have beams to absorb impact and crumple zones are present to the front and rear. (A camera to monitor reverse motion is also standard.)

The dash and center trim selections on the 2007 Lexus GS 450h are golden or black bird’s-eye maple or red walnut. Perforated leather is used for the trim on the door and the seats with a combination of wood and leather on the steering wheel and shift knob. Optional systems include pre-collision detection, navigation controlled by voice commands, a premium audio unit, and XM Satellite Radio.

V8 style acceleration, the fuel efficiency typical of 6 cylinder engines and exhaust emissions usually associated with an eco-friendly 4 cylinder. The Lexus hybrid engine operates seamlessly and provides a quiet ride. Both the interior and exterior are crafted of high quality materials and feature an outstanding fit and finish. Successfully bridging the gap between ‘green’ and ‘ performance’, the Lexus GS450h is a force to be reckoned with and it also achieves better gas mileage than would be expected for a midsized sedan. In conjunction with Lexus’ other GS sedans, the GS450h receives minor upgrades for the 2008 model year that include new front fascias, restyled gauges and the addition of side view mirror integrated turn signals. The attractive ‘ Black Opal Mica’ was also introduced as a new paint color for the GS450h this year.

Its extraordinary 340 horsepower is just one of the strengths of the Lexus GS450h. The 3.5-liter V6 engine, in combination with a high output electric motor, provides power seamlessly to the rear wheels through a continuously variable transmission. As is typical of hybrid technology, the GS450h uses the electric motor and will engage the V6 engine as necessary. However, what is uncharacteristic of a hybrid is the Lexus GS450h’s impressive acceleration-from a standstill or when midrange passing is required. This hybrid sedan can go from 0 to 60 in just over 5 seconds and the gas/electric hybrid powertrain achieves admirable EPA ratings of 22 mpg in the city and 25 mpg highway.

The 2008 Lexus GS450h represents the flagship of the Lexus GS lineup. It comes standard with a full compliment of premium luxury features including 18 inch wheels, adaptive xenon headlights, a sunroof, adaptive suspension dampers, heated and cooled leather seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, interior wood trim accents, Bluetooth technology, a back-up camera, keyless start and a 10 speaker audio system with in-dash CD changer and auxiliary audio jack. There are only a few options to choose from that include a navigation system, satellite radio, active anti-roll bars, a rear spoiler and an outstanding 14 speaker Mark Levinson audio system.

There seem to be no significant disadvantages to ‘going green’ with the 2008 Lexus GS450h. Overall, its combination of performance and luxury is quite impressive, which is unusual for a hybrid. Consumers looking for maximum driving force with minimal fuel consumption in a truly chic package should be more than satisfied with the GS450h.

The Lexus 450h is a rear drive hybrid vehicle that derives its power from a combination of a 3.5 Liter V6 engine and an electric motor. The combined engines give the vehicle 330 horsepower that is maintained through a continuously variable transmission. The GS 450h weighs 1875 kilograms and can achieve a speed of 97 kilometers per hour in 5.2 seconds. The vehicle is equipped with a system that has a camera mounted on the steering wheel that checks on the alertness of the driver and sends out an alarm if it feels that the driver has missed an oncoming danger.

The GS is equipped with leather seats, a stereo system with CD player located in the dashboard, Bluetooth technology and a moon roof. The vehicle has an option of a 330 watt surround sound stereo system which is manufactured by Mark Levinson, a system that helps the driver park the vehicle, wipers that sense rain, headlights that adjust according to the light conditions outside, and all-weather tires. All vehicles have air bags in the front, airbags on the side and air bags that protect the heads of all the passengers. The Lexus GS 450h is also provided with a system that calculates the angles of the steering wheel and speed of the vehicle so that it can help the driver stop the vehicle in an emergency.

Add $1,280 for the premium options including an interior trimmed in leather, entry via a remote, and outside mirrors that dim automatically and tilt downward when the vehicle is in reverse. Pay another $2,480 and you’ll gain features such as front seats that are both heated and ventilated, windshield wipers that are climate aware, and a power cushion extender for the driver’s seat.

A combination sound and navigation unit (Mark Levinson) is available for $4,050. The system’s DVD-based data is voice accessible. Sound is pumped through fourteen speakers by 300-watt surround sound audio. At the top of the trim levels, the Ultra-Luxury Package ($5,380) includes amenities like a steering wheel trimmed in wood and leather with a matching shift knob, front lighting that is adaptive, and seventeen-inch wheels (alloy) with a graphite polished surface.

The 2007 Lexus ES 350 is powered by a 3.5-liter, 272 horsepower V6 that will reach zero to sixty in 6.8 seconds with a top speed of 137 mph. Fuel efficiency is 21 mpg city and 30 highway on an 18.5 gallon tank. With seating for five, the sedan has 37.8 inches of front headroom (36.8 rear), leg room of 42.2 and 35.9 respectively, and a trunk capacity of 14.7 cubic feet.

Under the hood you’ll find a 3.5-liter, 272 hp, V6 that returns 19 mpg in town and 27 out on the road. The standard transmission is a 6-speed automatic with overdrive.

For the most part the ES 350 is a carryover from 2007, but this may be a case of not fixing what definitely was not broken. The ES is more or less the enhanced version of the popular Toyota Camry. The vehicle carries an impressive array of safety features including systems from traction and anti-skid, ABS, and air bags in the side (front and rear), curtain, and front knee position. Lexus uses a Pre-Collision System technology that actually prepares the brakes, seatbelts, and airbags for optimum operation when the sensors detect either a skid or impending crash. (The system works in concert with an adaptive cruise control.)

Inside wood trim and a sunroof are included features but drivers will have to pay extra for leather. Opting for the Ultra Luxury Package picks up a panorama roof in glass, systems for navigation, a camera for rear viewing, and headlamps linked to the steering. (Just to tweak the rumor mill a bit, it looks like a hybrid ES could be in the offing for the 2009 model year.)

Overall the 2008 Lexus ES 350 is a more than satisfying way for a driver to enter the luxury class of autos. It’s a comfortable, mid-sized sedan that gets good marks for acceleration, ride, noise level, and interior comfort. Lexus has a reputation for building brand loyalty. Taking a test drive in the ES will show you why before you even get around the block.

With seating for five passengers and a powerfully equipped drivetrain, the Lexus ES is one of the most highly appointed models in its class. The high MSRP could certainly deter a large number of buyers, but the ES is worth every penny. Just one trim level is enough for this model, as it is loaded with advanced technology and bonus features that surpass the competition. Rated as an Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle, the ES is sure to impress the eco-conscious buyers as well.

Under the hood, the Lexus ES 350 is equipped with a 272 horsepower 3.5L V6 engine that can reach 0-60 mph in less than seven seconds. A six-speed automatic transmission allows drivers to cruise at higher speeds in a lower rpm which can save on fuel consumption. Also, the dual exhaust system allows the engine to perform at its peak, while Dual Variable Valve Timing controls both the intake and exhaust valves for higher performance and fuel efficiency. With these additions, the ES is able to get around 19 city MPG and 27 highway MPG. Though the fuel economy is impressive, compared to the Cadillac STS, it simply cannot compete with flex-fuel and hybrid models on the market. Four-wheel independent suspension gives the ES both a smoother ride and improved handling.

Inside, this 2009 Lexus is packed with goodies. Ten-way power adjustable front seats are both heated and ventilated. The center armrest allows for an MP3 connection directly into the ES’s audio system, and dual climate control provides passengers with the ability to customize their perfect temperature setting. While the Lexus ES is grandly appointed, many of the techie gadgets are considered extras like the voice-activated DVD-based navigation unit, backup camera, and power rear sunshade.

Safety takes center stage in the Lexus ES with standard anti-lock brakes with brake assist, adaptive front lighting, and Vehicle Stability Control. The adaptive front lighting automatically adjusts the headlamps angle so that improved visibility is possible around curves and during turns. Brake assist will apply extra pressure to the brakes if the vehicle recognizes that an emergency stop needs to take place, while the stability control will keep the model on its intended course and help prevent rollovers.

In general, the 2009 Lexus ES is luxurious and safe, but some buyers could be put off by the fact that many of the sophisticated features come with an additional charge. With an intro price of $34,320, it is surprising that the ES does not come with more standard features. Families with children will be pleased with Lexus’ focus on safety, but individuals might expect more from the maker in terms of drivetrain options.
